Cows have been generous with their life force for eons, be it in the form of service in helping us work the land and transport goods, or through their milk, a juicy steak or leather. Many cultures view the cow as the embodiment of Mother Earth, of fertility, nurturing, and power for centuries.

In Egyptian mythology, Hathor was an ancient goddess worshipped as a cow-deity. Hathor was the Great Mother Goddess of joy, and was considered the nourisher of all things. She was originally a personification of the Milky Way, which was seen as the milk that flowed from the udders of a heavenly cow. She was also considered a protective goddess and an emblem of royalty. To Hindus and Buddhists, symbolism of the cow deals with patience and holiness. The calm, tender nature of the cow wins this right among the Buddhists.

It’s those big limpid eyes, framed by long thick lashes, that steal my heart when it comes to the beautiful bovine. The way they amble along lazily chewing and munching on the grass and flowers, enjoying the sunshine on their back. This all conjures up a feeling of tactile sensuality, indulgence in the finer things and the ability to enjoy life.

If the cow has plodded onto your path I suggest you follow her and watch carefully. See how she nourishes herself, and in turn others. How she embraces her solid sturdy beauty and others fall in love with her exquisite earthliness. Perhaps it is time you followed suit, fill your own cup, fall in love with your own beauty, take time to lie in the grass and feel the sunshine on your face. You may have the strength and stamina to carry the world on your shoulders, but it does not mean you have to all the time.
